Is Educational Therapy the help your student needs?

Our purpose is to identify and address the needs of students who learn differently. We specifically target the individual needs of each student based upon testing that may identify one or more difficulties which affect a student’s ability to learn. A trained educational therapist tailors the educational therapy to the individual student.

The DISCOVERY PROGRAM, a member of the National Institute of Learning Development, Chesapeake, VA, is a program of preventive, corrective, and supportive intervention for students who struggle to learn.

  • Preventive: Search scans are given to children in kindergarten and first grade to identify those who need extra work in perceptual skills (auditory, visual, motor) to become skilled readers. Teach is offered to those who demonstrate need.

  • Corrective: Educational Therapy is offered to those who have been diagnosed with a learning disability.  Intervention is aimed at stimulating deficit cognitive and perceptual skill areas and developing students who are able to be independent learners.

  • Supportive: Tutorial Study Hall is available for those who need help with the organizational and study skill aspects of their school endeavours.

Services offered:

  • NILD Educational Therapy – Corrective intervention to bring about change and independence in the classroom.
  • Search and Teach – Preventive program designed for young children, grades K-2.
  • Individualized Support – For non-therapy students who need extra guidance.
  • Tutorial Study Hall – Supportive program primarily for Middle and High School students to assist with homework and study skills.
  • Classroom Accommodations & Modifications –  Individualized for each student as needed and prescribed.
  • Optional avenues to graduation

What is Educational Therapy?

Discovery Tangrams

Educational Therapy is not tutoring. We do not teach the academic material that a student is learning in the classroom to help the student understand as a tutor would. Instead, we do design a program specifically for each student’s individual needs and use specialized techniques to stimulate development of brain functions used in learning. The strengthening of these brain functions then makes it easier to learn classroom material.

Our goal is for each student to become a confidential, independent learner in any regular classroom setting. This entails developing skills which are accessed automatically and allow the development of higher level critical thinking ability.

Why Educational Therapy?

The educational therapy process stimulates the brain to make permanent change. Learning disabilities may not totally disappear, but their effect can be greatly weakened. Skills and thinking strategies for lifelong learning is the goal.

When does Educational Therapy take place?

Therapy is performed twice weekly in a one-to-one setting. The environment is supportive and encouraging.Therapists pray with their students and help them apply Biblical concepts to the work they are doing.
