Varsity Volleyball
TKA volleyball is looking forward to a great season in 2007! Jessica Strater, from Francis Marion University, will be our new coach. Last year three starting seniors graduated, and we won 4 games. Cross Country
Cross country is a great sport. Coach Matt Terrio says, "I started coaching at The King's Academy in the fall of 2003. TKA has had much success in cross country over the past 4 years. In 2004, we placed 2nd in the state, just 3 points out of 1st place. In 2005, we placed 3rd in the state. I love coaching cross country. This sport pushes you to the limit like no other. There are no time-outs, half-times, or substitutions. It's all heart until it's over. This is the sport that's not a game." Varsity Tennis
TKA had a good year in 2006 with 7 players. They won 6 matches and lost 8. They begin practice this year on August 6 with a clinic at Oakdale Country Club with tennis pro Richard Storr. Thirteen girls have signed up, expressing an interest in playing on this year's tennis team. The four returning players are Kathleen Miele and Jessie Strickland (seniors); Anna Caudle (junior) and Elizabeth Graham (sophomore). Coach Harriet Cox says, "I look forward to another good year and a new crop of rookie players."
Varsity Football
The 2006 Lions' Football team continued building upon a youthful squad with only one senior and three juniors; the boys had to grow up as men. The team finished the season 2-9. Highlights for the season were the wins over Long Cane and St. Paul as well as senior kicker Hart Rivers playing in the North/South game. The 2007 season is much anticipated with all starters returning and being a year older. Welcome, Coach Marcel Boggs! JV Football
The 2006 season was a good year for our school. Head Coach Ken Ivey says, "Our players had fun, won games and finished with a good outlook for the coming year. For 2007, we hope to repeat our program with a goal to better last year's stats and keep in our minds that we should just have fun." Varsity Boys' Basketball
Head coach, Marc Burns, challenged his boys at the beginning of the season to believe that, indeed, they could meet their goal of going to state! Using the FIST concept, the boys learned to trust the Lord, their coaches and one another. The 2006-2007 season was a good one; this team learned to be thankful that they wear a TKA uniform, and they played with pride. They reached their goal of going to state and are excited about the upcoming season.
Jordan Burns and Webb Atkinson were selected for North/South All-stars. It was Jordan's second time. Everyone is looking forward to the upcoming season!
Varsity Girls' Basketball
Head coach, Barry Dean, says he is proud of his 2006-2007 squad and their hard work. Their record was 2-21, and if the focus is on records and numbers, the season could appear dismal; however, the team recognized they were young, not just in terms of age, but in terms of years of experienced play. The ladies improved in recognizing defenses, running appropriate offenses and breaking the press. The ladies learned how to work through much adversity. Beyond this, friendships were made that will go beyond the basketball court.
For the coming year, the team is emphasizing hard work on their road to becoming a fundamentally sound team. First priorities include understanding the game and position play. Varsity Soccer
For the 2006-2007 season, the TKA varsity soccer team compiled a 14-3 overall record and a 12-2 conference record, resulting in a 3-way tie for first place in the conference. TKA made it to the first round of the state play-offs. We had a very good season. Six seniors graduated and will not be returning next year, but the good news is that we still have a very strong core of players returning, and some young talent is moving up from JV. This season's team has the potential to have as good as, if not a better, season than we had last year. The future of the TKA Varsity Soccer team is looking bright for years to come. Head coach, Gene Rivers, is looking forward to the spring of next year to see the excitement on the players' faces when they hit the field for the first time.
Congratulations to Andrea Cagnoli for being selected to the North/South All-star game. JV Soccer
The 2007 TKA JV soccer team had a great season this past year. Coach Pat Brown noted, "Although several key players moved up to the varsity squad, this team proved they can play with the best teams in the state. With the skill level and determination this team had, the TKA soccer program will be in great shape for many years to come." TKA Varsity Golf
The TKA Golf team is open to boys and girls in grades 7-12. TKA has offered a golf program for the last 2 years. As a new program, we are encouraged by the past success of our players. During our first season, the team finished 3rd in the region and was offered an at-large bid to the state tournament. In our second season, with only one returning player, our team experienced a rebuilding effort. However, we did have an individual player, Luke Coates, an eighth grader, make the All-Region team. He went on to compete at the state tournament.
Coach Marty Coates says, "Golf is a great sport. As a coach, I believe young golfers can learn valuable lessons about life while having lots of fun. I require hard work and expect much of my players. But in the end, I hope our players learn to play a game they can play for most of their lives."
Golf clinics may be held in the fall. The golf season begins in late February. Sporting Clays "I am honored to say that sporting clays has put TKA and Florence, SC, on the map in a whole new way, " noted Coach Matt Terrio. This sport is brand-new to TKA (est. spring '07). This year's team consisted of 13 shooters, 10 of whom competed at Nationals in July. Our top intermediate squad went undefeated in their 1st season ever. They went on to win the State Title, then the National Title in July at the National Shooting Complex in Texas. This squad, consisting of Austin Mogy, Richmond Wilhoit, and Nicholas Long, set TKA sports' history twice this season. "Congratulations, team! It has been a blessing coaching you."
